The European Union (EU) has announced it will continue to support and promote Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) affairs in Ghana following the opening of an office for LGBTQ in Accra at Tesano, MyNewsGh.com has filed.
This is after the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values called for the shutting down of the LGBTQI office in Accra
According to the National Coalition for Proper Human Rights and Family Values, the presence of the LGBTQI office disregards the cultural values and sanity of the country. The coalition held a media briefing on Wednesday highlighting the looming dangers and threats of the activism of the LGBTQI in Ghana, demanding an immediate closure of the administrative office for homosexuals.
But the EU office in Ghana which participated in the opening of the LGBTQI office in Ghana has fired back, saying it will continue to support all civil society groups that will come out to openly advocate for gays and lesbians rights in Ghana.
The EU in a Facebook post said it stands for the “equalization, tolerance and respect” everyone, including for gays and lesbians as these are core values of the EU promoted worldwide.
The Ghana LGBTQI group had said there is a need for respect for human rights hence setting up an office for support purposes is a step in the right direction.
The group organised a fundraiser which was attended by several diplomats including the Australian High Commissioner who pledged to support the group.
